Quality Over Quantity

getting it right for offshore safety and longevity is our passion

Founder, Jay Phillips, started working on boats at Arvid Marine at Havre de Grace, MD when he was 14 years old and was fascinated with the craftsmanship and engineering involved in seagoing yachts.  Now at 58, he has worked in almost all aspects of the pleasure and charter yacht industry, in several different regions, locations and seas.

A long time 50 Ton USCG Captain, Phillips started in the Chesapeake, but loved surfing and did his best to stay close to where the waves were good.  Annapolis was close enough, but many years were spent at the Maryland and Delaware beaches running his Stiletto 27 daysail business.  Always ambitious to learn more, he headed to Annapolis full time for many years to work at notable performance sailing schools like JWorld Annapolis and Offshore Sailing School, while running pedicabs, bartending, captaining water taxis and tourboats and racing almost every night of the week.

Tempted by Ms Allison from the BVI Tourism Board, he took a stab at the British Virgin Islands and found a love for the Tropics.  Few Captains/Instructors know the BVI nooks and crannies better than Captain Phillips.  He loved finding the hidden spots for his guests and attracted a strong surfing clientelle who loved sailing between great surf spots during big wave season.

The traveling lifestyle left a void in his soul for his family and home near Havre de Grace. Spending time with his parents while he still could became a new priority.  His parents, Dr. Dudley Phillips and Margaret Phillips had moved mostly to Ft. Myers FL, so he spent most of his time on the Gulf Coast, learning a new sailing area between the Fl Keys and Panhandle.  After meeting his wife, they started a family and began working in the Keys and Bahamas after his parents passed away.

Now living on Hatteras Island, Phillips Boat Works and Hatteras Community Sailing are Jay’s passion.  We are delighted to offer services at 3 locations !  Hatteras Sailing Center in Buxton; Island Boatworks in Wanchese for large multihull projects; and Deep Creek Marina and Boatyard in Onancock VA for sloop and powerboat projects.

Selling Your boat?

Explore some Options With Us

In the USA it is expensive to refurbish old boats if your intention is to sell it.  Some vessels do better financially if they are put into a charter business, because it allows for some cash flow for improvements with the possibility of some tax advantages for running a boat as a business or second home.   Additionally, some vessel types just don’t have a good buyers market so they don’t sell for what they are really worth.  Hatteras Sailing is a Non Profit and can accept donations if they might end up being a net fundraising gain for the Sailing Educational Program.

Phillips Boat Works can help you with Vessel Management, Listing Services for selling your boat, or helping you donate it for the best possible tax benefit.  We love sharing our 40 years of experience in several marketplaces to help you find the best possible solution and best possible new boat, if you are looking to upgrade !
