STEAM Learning Through Introduction To Sailing
Event Charter: STEAM Learning Sailing Theory targeted to 4th-8th graders. Coaches will present to students for (~45 mins); Break out groups for interactive learning on board each boat (~45 mins); Sailing around to beach on south island; During sailing youth will be given positions and rotated so that everyone gets to participate in operating lines and tiller; (~ 2hrs sailing); Beachside campfire and smore’s (1.5 hr); Sailing back to silver lake (~ 2hrs sailing) for parent pick-up.

Ocracoke Delivery and Return: The delivery from the Phillips Boatworks Buxton Boathouse to Ocracoke’s Silver Lake is roughly 36 nm as the crow flies. Depending on wind direction, given upwind conditions, that could be as much as double. Figuring an average boat speed over land of 7 knots, we include up to 12hrs sailing each way. Our experienced crews have sailed these boats to silver once per fall for the past two years and the trip has required one overnight per leg. Navigating at night is not a good choice.
NOTE: Our crew has done this trip once per fall for the past two seasons and experience dictates an overnight stop en-route. The weather, wind speed, and direction in fall is unpredictable and subject to unpredicted changes.
