42′ 1990 Hylas Sportfishing Yacht

Great deal for project minded person able to put in some sweat equity!

First Person with $15,000 takes it!

Priced to move quick to the right buyer, this boat is a rare find made by the World Class Yacht Manufacturer – Hylas Yachts. Known for high quality marine manufacturing and design Hylas builds more than just sailboats. Their powerboat line features some multi million dollar yachts. This boat is priced to move because it needs a repower of both main engines which are currently Detroit 6v92s. With some smart choices and sweat equity, one could turn this vessel back into a $200,000 to $400,000 value depending on how they do the finish work.

Solid Foundation

When looking at most older project boats, I dont often see much to work with because the hull materials and construction are so bad that it would be insane to put more money and effort into something with poor quality underlying construction. But, this is not the case with a boat built by Hylas! Designed by Wynn and Hudson…. and built by Queen Long Marine in Taiwan in 1990 and imported to Cambden, NJ by Harborview Yacht Sales, this is one of the rare finds where there is a great hull and infrastracture to work with!

Repower

Repowering a bigger yacht like this is no small undertaking. If you ask the local yards and diesel experts they will tell the hands off customer to expect over $100,000 for the tear out and replacement with new engines. But there are other options for those who are skilled with engines and boatwork. If I personally were to take on the risk, I would find a reliable rebuilt set of engines. The 6v92’s might not be the best choice, as they have not done so well on this particular boat, but a recent search turned up a fresh rebuilt set of engines for $29k which could probably be negotiated down because the accessories on the current engines are all pretty fresh and corrosion free.

Accessory Systems

Air conditioning, Generator, plumbing, electrical systems are all pretty manageable to repair and/or replace some things. Steering, shafts, transmissions, rudders, props are all in nice condition. Mostly the systems need some running and testing to see what needs maintenance, but probably not so much replacement.

Layout

The layout of this Convertable style Sport Fishing Vessel is very standard. It has a spacious back deck where a fighting chair needs to be installed. The Flybridge is also large, very open and spacious. Walking inside you step into a large salon area with big seats and couches. There are large front windows in this design, which is not so common in Sportfishers, but nice to have when the weather outside isnt so nice. Stepping down forward there is comfortable galley area. Up front in the bow features a nice queen bed stateroom. The bath is also spacious with a shower and electric head. Across from the bathroom is a set of single bunks for the kids or the crew!

The Refit and Repower

The engine and below deck systems first, because that is the messiest job. Once the hull bilges and engine room are spotlessly cleaned and repainted, the new engines can be reinstalled. All systems around the engines would need testing, cleaning and maintenance. There are 3 AC Units and a Generator for the most part in the Engine Room area, Once this huge task is done, its time to refresh the upholstery, flooring and clean up some of the woodwork, especially around the main front windows. After putting back any portion of the aft cabin wall from the engine hoisting adjustments, its then time to start looking at some exterior cleanup and maintenance. The boat will need a new chartplotter and and radar, new exterior canvas and upholstery….. mostly some teak decking or optional stick down foam style deck surface material. Finally rigging up for fishing with some outriggers, poles and other fun fishing stuff. After all this the boat will blend right in with all the $500k and above value boats around it at the marina !
